Sounds like you have a tough one to break. With most of the pigs we show, we walk them around something like a tree over and over or a barrel, just something round and walking them just about as close as possible to it. Normally we use this to teach them to turn anywhere, but in your case they would also have a hard time running around something. |

if they start to run, just hit them on the side of the face with the whip. they usually slow down |

Upnorth, letting a pig out in cooler weather will make it run around, one because it is cooler and two because they feel good. Whipping a pig will NOT help only make it worst. What most people don't know is a pig is a VERY SMART animal. My suggestion is to continue to let them run off the energy and then try to walk them. |

Reply with quote | #8 | Walking on an empty stomach seems to make them a little more contrary, too.
Pigs are smart, as stated. I think it varies depending on the animal. I don't think beating a pig will make all of them walk better, but a showman must show the pig who is boss.
Smarter pigs are easier to train, ones that are not as smart takes a little more training; however, it has to be done, consistently.
The cooler the weather, the more they are going to want to run. The less they are out of the pen, the more they are going to want to run.
In addition, I would be careful using anything to calm the animal that is a medication. Depends if showing at a show that will test for such things.

I have won many state, county, and national showmanship contest. i always found that when you let them out of the pen use your wip or pipe whatever u show with, and when you let them out of the pen walk up by their head then when they try to take of tap then in the head with the wip or pipe and just stay up on their head and you may have to show them like that in the ring. |

When i walk my hogs is right before i feed them and when you first let them out of the pen they want to run. Personally i dont believe in whipping a hog but when they start to run tap them right between the eyes on the forehead and it should slow them down. Do this everytime and they will learn to slow down when you do this. |
